José Luis Cuevas unique style produced a legacy of work that places him among the internationely established Mexican artists of this century. He is a self-taught artist - drawer, engraver and sculptor. In the 50's Cuevas was very active in the group called "Rupture Generation - Generacion de Ruptura" that aimed to break apart from the Mexican mural painting school of social content.

Cuevas exhibited in New York, Washington, Santiago, Paris, Rome, Venice, Sao Paulo, Vienna, Madrid. Cuevas's awards include the Drawing Prize at the V Biennial of Sao Paulo (1959), the National Prize of Science and Art of México - the highest distinction of the Mexican Government for scientists and artists (1981); he was admitted as a Gentleman of the Order of the Arts and Letters of the French government (1991). In 1997 in Madrid he was honored with the Tomas Francisco Prieto Award in Engraving bestowed by Queen of Spain Sofia. His contribution to art was honored by The José Luis Cuevas Museum in México City.
